While Grayson Gilmour’s musical career began in high school with his self-released EPs gaining reviews in national publications such as Rip It Up and Real Groove, the mid-to-late 2000’s saw his place in Aotearoa’s alternative music scene established as part of the post-punk outfit So So Modern – a band which along with the likes of The Mint Chicks and Cut Off Your Hands, rode a wave of all ages / university student popularity, generated by the early hype of A Low Hum tours and festivals. He has toured internationally as both a solo artist, and part of So So Modern, supporting the likes of Caribou, Foals, Dirty Projectors & Deerhoof, and has released works on labels such as Flying Nun (NZ), Transgressive (UK), Unter Schafen (DE), RBMH (AT) and P-Vine (JP). While following the international summer festival circuit, Grayson developed an interest in writing music for film – landing his first feature film in 2012, The Most Fun You Can Have Dying directed by Kirstin Marcon, for which he picked up the award for ‘Best Score’ at the NZ Film Awards. His work for Shopping directed by Mark Albiston & Louis Sutherland, premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and was nominated for 'Best Score' at the NZ Film Awards (2013). Since then, Grayson has gone on to win a Silver Scroll for his work on Consent: The Louise Nicholas Story directed by Robert Sarkies, and his score for short film Fetch directed by Samuel James Gill was the winner of the Gold Award, Best Original Score - Global Independent Film Awards (2021). More recently he supervised the on-set and post-production music for Joseph Gordorn-Levitt’s A24 / Apple TV series Mr. Corman. His recent solo album Holding Patterns attracted early media attention – with esteemed NZ music critic, Nick Bollinger, praising its ‘powerful kinetic polyrhythms’ in his profile of Grayson for the Iwi Waiata / AudioCulture website. Featuring an extensive list of performers and producers, the album has become a landmark in Grayson’s musical curiosity and collaborative spirit.
